Atalanta – the myth of The woman Argonaut

Heroine of antiquity, the most quick of all humans and the only female argonaut. The story is related sometimes with…
the αρκαδικούς and sometimes with the βοιωτικούς myths. The two legends have so much in common, characteristics that do not allow us to assume that there were two different heroines with the same name.
In the arcadian myth, Atalanta, was a daughter of Iasi (or Σχοινέως) and Κλυμένης. Home was Pet, the Mainalo or the Tegea. When he was born, the Atalanta, her father, because he wanted only sons, abandoned on mount Parthenion near the entrance of a cave. In the beginning, the Atalanta, the care of a bear (symbol of Artemis) and later was picked up some hunters. Close to the left until she’s older and has learned the secrets of hunting. When she grew up she wanted to get married, lived with purity and once killed with the arrows of the Centaurs Ροίκο and Υλαίο that had tried to rape her.
He took part in the hunt for the Καλυδώνιου boar despite the reactions of the gathered heroes, who refused to participate in a hunt that would take place a woman.Meleager, the son of the king Οινέως, the promoter of the company, fell in love with the heroine and she convinced the other heroes to accept. After six days of hunting the Atalanta killed along with the Μελέαγρο the boar, throwing one of her deadly arrow to the animal and according to the custom received as a prize the head and the skin of the animal.
He took part in the argonautic expedition with the Μελέαγρο. After the end of the campaign of the burial games held in honour of Pelias, Atalanta beat in a wrestling Peleus.
According to the arcadian version married the εξαδελφό of Μελανίωνα, who had fallen in love with when we had to meet in the wanderings of the woods. From this marriage was born the Παρθενοπαίος, which the rip disease states as one of the Seven against Thebes. In accordance with the βοιωτικό legend parents of Atalanti was the Σχοινέας and the Κλυμένη. From a very young he had shown great skills in hunting and was invincible on the run. He lived in the forests and avoided people because he wanted to stay loyal to Artemis and remained chaste, or, according to others, because there was some prophecy that said that if you marry will turn into an animal. Her father accepted her decision not to marry under the condition that if anybody win in a race he would make her his wife.
The Atalanta, because he was invincible on the run, has agreed, on the condition that you had the right to kill the vanquished. For this reason, at the start of the games, giving each suitor a little head start. She followed, holding a spear with which he was stabbing the new when he arrived. Many had found such a death until the Ιππομένης or Ιππομέδων surpassed the Atalante on the run with a trick pointed out by the goddess Aphrodite. The goddess gave him three golden apples from the Garden of the Hesperides, or according to another tradition from the wreath of Dionysus. During the race, as well as the Ιππομένης having started first preceded, shot in the back by a golden apple each time Atalanta was closing in on it. She stopped to pick it up and delay, with the way that the Ιππομένης managed to win the race. The two young men in the heat of the love they have roamed the forests and joined together in a temple dedicated to the goddess Cybele, or according to others, Zeus, Calinico. Because this was considered unholy were punished by their transformation into a pair of lions.
